Sakura Watch – March 31, 2014 – Buds in High Park

Sakura Watch – March 31, 2013 – Buds in High Park were looking good throughout the various areas of the park. Smaller sizes were seen by Grenadier Pond sizing an average of 4-8mm while the trees near the sports fields were already 10mm-13mm on average. These are still the early stages of the blossom but good signs that they may have survived one of our harshest winters in years! Time will tell in the weeks ahead how they progress, but these photos show the beautiful layered texture of the young buds. Let’s hope that they keep growing into blossoms in the weeks ahead!

First look at the Sakura // Cherry Blossoms in 2014

First look at the Sakura // Cherry Blossoms in 2014 in mid-March show the early stages of the buds have seemed to so far survived the harsh winter and cold. Although spring may be soon on the calendar, as you the pictures show, the winter is still hanging on which will likely push the blooming dates in late April or even May. More to see in the weeks ahead!

Sakura Watch – April 26, 2013 – Pink tips show hope, but we continue to wait

Sakura Watch – April 26, 2013 – Pink tips show hope, but we continue to wait

Blossoms are only starting to show beautiful shades of pink peaking out from the majority of buds. Our cooler weather has left us continue to wait until next weekend to start seeing the blossoms bloom. The good news is that there should still be a decent bloom for many to enjoy during Mother’s Day this year! See the latest photos from this evening below:

Sakura Watch – April 24, 2013 – Buds grow bigger, closer to bloom

Sakura Watch – April 24, 2013 – Buds grow bigger, closer to bloom and are even beginning to demonstrate signs of moving into the next stage towards blooming. The telltale signs include the buds that seem to stretch out and have distinct dark pink tips, such as the image below:

Its still possible that by this weekend we may start to see a few early blooms begin but the real bloom will most likely have to wait until early May. The trees near the soccer fields (closest to the Bloor Street entrance) usually start to bloom earliest, and a few trees down the Hillside path towards Grenadier Pond. The blooms are getting closer – here are some more photos taken this evening.

Sakura Watch – April 21, 2013 – Buds swell and little else is to be seen.

Sakura Watch – April 21, 2013 – Buds swell and little else is to be seen.

After some more cold wet weather the sun shone today to show only little change in the sakura buds throughout the park. Though defnitely more swollen since last check, little else has changed and so they keep us waiting into May! Let’s hope a sunny and warmer week will help speed up the process!

Also a special hello to Grace & Mike who I met during my trip to park today – always a pleasure meeting fans of the Sakura // Cherry Blossoms 🙂

Sakura Watch – March 31 – Happy Easter

Sakura Watch for March 31 – Happy Easter everyone!

Current peak bloom estimate: April 19-28

The buds are still closed for the Easter long weekend and a bit of cold over the first few days of April will only help to slow down the buds from opening a little longer. But I’ll keep checking on the Sakura over the week and add further updates to the progress of the trees. Here are some photos taken March 29-31st:
